The Idea

The original idea of Esikidz out of school/ Teacher App came from the requirement of one of our big clients. The daycare centre has multiple locations in Vancouver so activity planning for children in different program plays a significant role in interaction between daycare centre and parents. They used to print paper timetables for and put an announcement in centre, which can be easily ignored or discarded by parents.

Project Brief

Based on the idea mentioned before, our team started to design the Esikidz Teacher Web App that will be able applied to both out of school program and daycare centre cases.

In addition to the timetable feature, the app released with another three major functions based on feedback from our daycare centre clients, which is attendance, photo and report. Iterating designs several times with our partner daycare centre and also connecting the service closely to Esikidz Parent Web App.

Interview

Before diving my head in first it was important for me to understand the use cases, which are the daily routines of teachers in daycare centre, including how they check in and out children, manage classrooms and communicate with parents. Also we already had some ideas but still need to validate our assumptions.

The Problem

While initially our focus was on catering to daycare centers, after the release of the first version, we received interest from clients who run out-of-school programs and wish to utilize the app as well. However, it's important to note that accommodating the attendance checking feature for out-of-school programs presents a distinct challenge due to the varying nature of their operations.

The second challenge we encountered relates to the effectiveness of the one-by-one check-in process. While this approach proves successful in smaller daycare centers, it becomes less efficient for those with larger classroom capacities. Interestingly, some new daycare center clients opt to manage the check-in process as a batch, handled solely by the classroom teacher. This variation highlights the need for a flexible solution to accommodate diverse operational scales and preferences.

In response to this scenario, I revised the UX design and introduced additional functions to address these concerns and make the system more adaptable. This effort culminated in the development of version 2 of the software.
